Year of the nerd!
It was a very calm day at work, so I decided to take the afternoon off. I still had some overtime :-)
After the cleaning had been done, I decided to take a look at Buzzfeed and stumbled across this article that made my whole day! And the nerdiness will continue today, as I'm heading to the movies with the boyfriend to see 'the Hobbit: the desolation of Smaug'. With Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, Martin Freeman and Orlando Bloom.
Enjoy your Friday! And please excuse me while my inner nerd keels over.

Stories that stay with you.
Yesterday, it was Christmas. As we were having dinner at my parent's, my boyfriend and I were looking at some old pictures of my, my sister and my family. Thankfully, there weren't too many embarrassing pictures in there :-)
But leave it to my mother to bring up some stories from my childhood. Like the time Sinterklaas came to visit at my dad's office. We were there as well, as it was an event for the families of all employees. Sinterklaas asked my sister and me if my parents had been good all year. I shyly nodded, but my sister proceeded to tell him that our mom had, but that she wasn't so sure about my dad. This, of course, intrigued everyone. Sinterklaas asked my sister why my dad hadn't been nice, and my sister replied 'well, he snores so loudly our mommy can't sleep'! Que laughter from everyone!
Of course, there were also some stories about little me, being little miss smarty pants. I learned to talk quite young. So my after seeing a picture of me with my granddad, of whom I have no memories as he died when I wasn't even three years old, my mom told us this story.
My granddad loved to tease me. The summer before I turned two, my mom, dad and I went on vacation to the coast. (my sister hadn't been born yet) I was telling my granddad about the vacation we had planned, and how excited I was about sleeping over at the coast. But he said that that wasn't possible. So I asked him why. Well, he proceeded, your beds won't fit in the car. After which I apparently gave him a 'don't be silly' look, put my hands on my hips and said in my best admonishing tone 'But granddad, mommy and daddy have made reservations in a hotel!'. I honestly don't remember any of it, but my mom and dad swear that everyone almost fell out of their chairs from laughing too hard.
Those are the stories that will stay with you :-)

What's next, an Oscar?
Well, today it was back to work after a nice trip to London. First thing I did, was go to the mail room, and check if there was mail in my in-tray. There was. But I had no idea of what was inside. It was a Christmas card from one of my managers, which covered me in golden glitter. And another award!
This time, I was awarded a certificate of excellence for my work on a project we managed to close 7 weeks prior to the estimates! If this keeps going, I might win an Oscar soon! Nah, just kidding :-)
And of course, it's Christmas eve. I'm not much of a Christmas person, but I love receiving/giving presents, good food, family and great company. It'll be a bit of a run around the country the next few days, but hey. It's worth it!
Happy Christmas or whatever you celebrate! Stay warm, stay safe, don't drink and drive, and happy holidays! What are you doing for Christmas?

What made me happy today? Award!
I got an award at work today, for all my hard work the past months. It's awesome to be recognized for your hard work :-)
Apologies for the short post today, busy social agenda!

You are beautiful.
Close your eyes for a moment, and think about what you don't like about yourself. How many things did you come up with?
Close your eyes again, and think about what you like about yourself. How many things did you come up with this time?
I'm going to take a guess here, but chances are that you can name a lot more things you don't like about yourself than you can name things you do like about yourself. Am I right?
Why is that? Is it because of what you see in the magazines? Look again.
Is it because of what you see in the windows of fashion stores? That's changing.
Is it because you were / are being bullied for being different? Listen to this.
You are beautiful. You really are.
Remember what Edna said about supermodels in the Incredibles? 'Supermodels. Heh! Nothing super about them... spoiled, stupid little stick figures with poofy lips who think only about themselves.' Even though this might be a bit of a harsh statement, there is a grain of truth in it. The beauty standards set out by the fashion industry and magazines is unrealistic.
Even I am influenced by all of this. For the longest time I wouldn't wear shorts, because I was scared about what people would think when they see the scars on my leg. Do you know how many bad reactions I've had about them? None. Yes, some people were looking at them, but that's unavoidable I guess.
I'm just happy to see that the tides may be turning at last. Because you are beautiful. Even if you're not a classical beauty. Even if you've always hated the way your nose looks when seen from a certain angle. Or if you don't like your freckles or scars. They're what makes you you.
And if everyone looked the same, this world would be much more boring, no?

300 + 9!
No, not the movie. This is my 300th blog post! Wow, I can't believe how fast this is all going.
Also, I had quite a laugh today. I went to the Metalzone, and saw a CD that I wanted to buy. Sadly, it was sitting on a top shelf and I was too short to reach it. So I had to ask Wim, the owner of the store if he could please get the CD for me. Which, nice as he is, he did. So I jokingly suggested that he should add a little step to his store, after which he points to the one in the corner. Whoops. I didn't see that one. Oh well, better luck next time?
And now for the '9' part. There's a game going on FB. People are posting a certain number of facts about themselves. If you like this you will be given a number and then you can reveal that many facts about yourself. I got the number 9. So here goes:
1) I have a huge list of completely useless talents. For example: I can read a text that is upside down almost as fast as a text that isn't. Or I can slice a bread perfectly with just a knife.
2) I love books. Nothing will ever beat the smell of a new or old book. Yet I do possess a e-book reader, as I never could store the +1000 books I have on there in my apartment.
3) I cry really easily when watching a movie or reading a book. In real life, I've learned to contain my tears a bit more :-)
4) I am a huge Star Wars fan, but I also like Star Trek. And Star Gate. And Battlestar Galactica. And the list goes on. Yes, I am obsessed with space. I was a member of a youth astronomer's society for 7 years.
5) My hair has never been the same color for longer than 6 months since I was 15.
6) I have a brain-twin. Which is beyond cool! We tend to drive other people a little bit crazy, especially when we randomly start singing 'just keep swimming' at the same time. My brain-twin's BF exclaimed (in a slightly exasperated way) "There's two of you!" the first time I met him. Nuff said.
7) English is not my first language. It's also not my second language. It's my third. I learned French before English. Dutch is my mother tongue. I also speak German. I know a decent amount of Spanish, Italian and Swedish; and I'm trying to learn conversational Japanese.
8) I can curse in a lot more languages than the ones listed above. I'm usually a very mild-mannered person, but I can spew profanities at a rate that would make a sailor blush.
9) I make up stories about the people I see sitting around me when I'm eating somewhere or waiting for something. I do write short-stories but I never dare to put them out there, because I don't think they're any good. The same goes for my drawings.
Happy Saturday!

Happy! Or not?
So, I could go on and gush about the bed and breakfast I'm staying at. I mean, look at the place!
And yes, I've tried out the jacuzzi :-)
Now, it's not something I usually do, but in this case I will interrupt the regular scheduled programming.
There's been a disaster. People in the Philippines are dead, dying or in desperate need of help. It's on the way, but it needs to get there fast. And you can help too. Donate to your local charities if you can. The links are in Dutch, but you can always check out how to donate to your local Red Cross, Medicines without Borders or other charities. If you can't donate, please help and spread the word. These people need our help, and they need it now. So please share this message and help spread the word.

More bubbles!
What made me happy today? More bubbles!
On Monday, I talked about how much I love taking long bubble baths. Well, I'm currently staying at a bed & breakfast for work, and my room has a jacuzzi! It's filling up as I write this. So you know what I'll be doing this evening :-)

Girl on fire!
Yes, I was on fire today. Not literally, otherwise I wouldn't be writing this ;-)
I don't know how or why, but I was in an awesomely productive state. By the time it was 11 in the morning I had read 115 emails, responded to the ones that I needed to respond to, performed a training, written a report and two letters, gotten my flu shot and registered my car for GPS updates.
And this continued throughout the day. In the end, I wrote four letters and three reports, did a bunch of trainings and cleared my entire to-do list. For those of you wondering how much coffee I had: one cup. That was it.
I don't know how I'd gotten so productive today, but I'm pretty darn happy about it!
How was your day? I hope it was as great as mine!

When awesome strikes!
Today was a great day. So many awesome things happened! Here's the list:
- work was fun, I had a lot of laughs. The study nurse was bossing the professor around, while I was trying to keep a straight face.
- a friend of mine became a father of a healthy baby boy!
- today's Questionable Content manages to capture how I usually feel about wearing heels.
- a family member got great news about her beloved pet!
- today's Star Power is impossibly precise!
- awesome person is awesome
- you might not want to tick this one off
- and last but not least: remember the fault in our stars? I came across this awesome review today :-)
I hope your day was as awesome as mine!

Hello battlestar!
About 2.5 months ago, I blogged about how I would be saying goodbye to my battlecruiser. Yesterday, the day had finally arrived! I took the battlecruiser (the Ford) for it's last drive to work. It felt kind of weird, because even though the car had it's flaws, it served me well.
But a little before 11 o'clock, I got a call from the reception. My new car had arrived! Eagerly, I dashed towards it. The first thing I noticed was that choosing a red one was a great idea! Good thing the man delivering my car took me through the basics of this car, because otherwise I would have been lost. So many buttons, thingamagicks and dudemabobs! No complaints about the service either, they delivered it right to the door of the office. And if I ever need to have maintenance or repairs done, I just have to call the garage. They'll pick it up at 10, and deliver it back at 4. Service much?
So I turned the keys to the battlecruiser over to the rental company. No teary goodbyes, but I'll always remember the battlecruiser fondly.
Time to get in to the battlestar, and put her in the parking lot. That's where I encountered a small issue. I couldn't figure out how to get the car in reverse for the life of me. After about 5 minutes of fiddling and messing with the clutch, I decided to call the garage. Turns out, you have to push the clutch down in order to get it in reverse. Boy, did I feel silly. Any way, embarrassment aside, off we were to the parking lot. Too bad it was only a 150m drive :-)
But driving home, I got to put the battlestar to the test a bit more. And let me tell you, that car is a smooth drive! She pulls up really well (one of my main complaints about the Ford). She handles the turns smoothly, and is very comfortable! The engine purrs like a little kitten :-)
The battlestar has little nooks and crannies for storing items, which is very convenient. Most certainly if you spend a lot of time in your car, like me. The trunk space is generous, I could easily fit in there. Of course, the battlecruiser had more trunk space, but I didn't need that. The pedals of the batllestar are arranged much better, the gears on the clutch are closely together, which makes for easy gear shifting. The placement of the hand brake is a bit odd, but in no way cumbersome.
I could go on and on about all the options and features, but I don't want to bore you to death ;-) Suffice it to say: I love my brand new red batllestar! I'm going to have a lot of (safe) fun driving her around! The Volvo V40 is an awesome car :-D

Hoodie
Ah, it's fall. The leaves are changing colour, there's more rain, the mornings are colder. Which means it's time to break out the hoodies again! I love hoodies! They're warm, comfortable, make me happy and are just awesome.
I usually change into one after I get home :-)
This is my favorite hoodie:
And hoodies are great in situations like this! I was eating a sandwich while on vacation in the Ardennes. BF managed to get a hold of my iPod and started annoying me with it. I used my hoodie to hide :-)
"Stop taking pictures of me!"
"No? Okay, well, then I'll hide!"

Phonebloks
Phonebloks is a concept for a new type of phone. Instead of throwing out the whole phone when something gets slow or stops working, phonebloks is made up out of changeable components. That way, you can change the component that is slow, or broken. It'll allow you to create the phone you want.
I really love this idea! And I hope this is something that really happens. But in order to do that, they need your support. Take a look at the phonebloks website, and join the thunderclap before 29 October 2013.
I'd love to have a phone that I can make the way I want it. A phone that I don't have to get repaired or toss out when it breaks. What do you think?

Catch your ZZzzz's
Wow, I slept so well last night! I only woke up at 10.30 this morning. That almost never happens to me :-) Must be my advancing age, or a fluke / glitch / bug. So I decided to take myself for a long overdue haircut. Which was about the funniest one I'd ever gotten. As I'm planning to grow my hair out again, the hairdresser only cut the front and back, not the sides :-)
Once my hair was done, I got a cup of coffee at koffie Onan. Then I walked back home, as it's a lovely Indian summer day. Now I'm going to get ready for my birthday party with my friends this evening!
Enjoy your Saturday!

Sing a song
OMG, Faderhead used me in a song! I'm in a song!!! This just made my month!
How did this happen? Yesterday, Faderhead posted a call on his Facebook page, asking girls to record a few sentences. I decided to go ahead, nothing ventured is nothing gained. So I sent him the mp3 with the sentences he needed. About 15 minutes later, he sent me an email, asking if I could record the same sentences in Dutch again. I was happy to help :-)
This morning I woke up, and saw he posted the song! You can find it here. I'm the girl you hear at 2:50, talking in Dutch. This is beyond cool! I've always kind of dreamed about this :-) I'm in a song from one of my favorite artists ever!

TEDx youth
What made me happy today? TEDx youth Flanders!
Today, I volunteered at a TEDx event in Antwerp. It was awesome! I met a lot of great people, heard some great talks and attended 2 great workshops. I made my own t-shirt with the guys from teeville. Then there was a workshop on enthusiasm in which I got to smash a plate :-)
If you've got the chance to go to be TEDx event, make sure you do! I laughed and learned a lot!

Hole in one!
No, I didn't play golf :-) But I did get a report approved in one go.
When I go to one of my sites, I have to write a report about it. Usually, that report comes back with some comments. Things that need to be added, deleted, changed or stuff like that. But this one got approved right away :-) Yay!
Maybe it was because it's Friday, but I like to think it was because I just wrote a good report.
And in other news: there may not be a blog tomorrow. I'll be volunteering at TEDx youth, which will keep me busy almost all day.

The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls
Yesterday evening, I entered The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls. I came out victorious. We reclaimed the Asylum!
I don't even have enough superlatives to describe Emilie Autumn's performance last night. It was an awesome, epic, amazing, touching, heart-warming, joyful, mad, insane, shenanigan-filled march to victory. It was wow, just so wow. I'm a bit hoarse today, from cheering so loudly. The crowd took a little while to get warmed up, but by the end of the show, it seemed like the whole room just exploded.
The songs were great, and well-performed. The acts were mesmerizing. And a bit creepy. I added a picture below of the black creature that took the stage during 'the scavenger'... There were loads of shenanigans, but also some very touching, tender and heart-warming moments. The best moment of the show? For me that was when Emilie herself was standing right in front of me. She looked right at me. Her eyes briefly flitted down to the heart I'd drawn on my cheek. Her eyes got that look of recognition in them, she briefly smiled at me and nodded lightly as if she tried to say 'keep fighting sister'. I felt so connected to her at that moment.
The show started with 'F.L.A.G.' and ended with 'One foot'. And then it was over. The crowd exploded. We kept applauding, cheering, whistling. And then Emilie and the bloody crumpets came out again. Emilie started talking about how amazing we were. About how all of us Plague Rats were special. And how she always loved the girl Plague Rats, but how the gentlemen were her heroes. She thanked the audience for being there, for giving her a home and a chance to do all of this. She made me tear up...
I don't know if she'll ever read this, but in case she does, I'd love to say this to Emilie: it's us, your Plague Rats, who should be thanking you. I've been a fan of you since Enchant. I love your music, I love your look, I love the way you don't hesitate to speak your mind. So thank you for the wonderful music you make. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. Thank you for the amazing shows you bring. And most of all: thank you for helping me through a lot of things with your music. Thank you.
And now it's time for the photo bombardment!
And my new tank-top!

Hey! Teachers!
The new school-year started yesterday. I know that many kids will be sad, parents will be glad and teachers will be, in some cases, awesome! Like these teachers :-)
Teachers can be a major influence. We've probably all had that one teacher we really liked, that helped us, connected with us or inspired us. So here's to the teachers out there: keep being awesome!

Bye battlecruiser!
Yup, a new car is coming my way. And it was totally unexpected! As you may remember, I got my driver's license recently. When I went to drop off a copy at out human resources department, my colleague informed me that I still had to pick a car.
Wait. Pick a car? But I already have a car... Well, as it turns out, that was not my permanent car. I got to pick a definitive one. Sjeesj, do they spoil me or what? So I had a hard choice to make. I like the battlecruiser a lot. It's a Ford C-max grand, and has a ton of trunk-space. But once you hit 70 kph, it starts to get sluggish. It has a 1.6 diesel engine with 95 hp, but I feel like it's just not enough for a car this size. My battlecruiser can fit up to 7 people, or a ton of luggage. The way it handles in sharper turns isn't that great either. I'm also not convinced of the way the pedals are arranged, for some reason the gas pedal is a lot further away than the breaks... Again, it's a great car but it's also not very eco-friendly. It uses 6.4 l per 100 km, and has a Co2 exhaust of 120 g / km.
So keeping in mind my two most important rules for picking a car (being comfort and trunk space) I got to it. I took a look at the list, immediately eliminated several cars for being to small. And in the end I chose the Volvo V40. Fuel consumption is rated at 3.4 l per 100 km, and the Co2 exhaust is 88 g / km. It has a ton of safety options, which all come standard as Volvo is very engaged towards safety. Like it says on their website 'By 2020, nobody shall be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo.' And if you see the array of safety features and safety options that are available for the V40 I think they might even manage that. The trunk space is about 100 l less than the battlecruiser, but the Volvo should be a lot more comfortable. So the choice was made.
And then they told me I had to pick a color. Oh dear me. It took me a long time to decide on the car, and I didn't think about that! My first impulse was 'black', as my clothes always are. But then I got to thinking. Black does get warm in the summer, it shows dirt really well and is hard to see when it's dark. Most of the other colors in the range didn't really appeal to me. Several shades of grey and silver weren't for me, I don't really like those. The copper one was a big no, definitely not my thing. That left me with blue and red. I didn't like the shades of blue, and red is a very noticeable color, so red it was!
Now I have to wait a week until I get my new car. But I don't doubt that my battlecruiser will continue to serve me well :-)
