200!

What made me happy today? Reaching 200!
Yes, this is my 200th blog post! Woohoow :-)
And I got something for free, just because I was polite. I'm going on vacation tomorrow. We'll be driving through France, which requires having alcohol testers in your car. So I went to pick up a pair. I walked through the entire store, but no sight of them. In the meantime, the employee behind the desk was dealing with a rather rude customer. I felt kind of bad for the employee, so I put on my nicest smile when I went up to the desk / register to ask about the alcohol testers. That's when I spotted them. In a basket at the register. So I took two, and gave them to that employee. I told him about how I had trouble finding them but only did when I wanted to ask about them which I found funny and made me giggle a bit. He looks at me with this relieved look (probably because I wasn't shouting at him like the previous customer) and says 'well, I'll give you the second one for free, because you're being so nice and polite.' My jaw dropped to the floor.
I always try to be polite. I was raised that way. My parents taught me to say 'please' and 'thank you' and all that. Being rewarded for being polite is nice, but it's not why I do it. Then again, getting something for free is kind of nice :-)

Bare

What made me happy today? Bare.
I finally did it. I wore a dress without full length leggings. Not to work, but at my BFs and to go home. BF doesn't like me hiding my legs.
A little back story here: in 2004 I had an accident while skiing. My right ski came off, my left ski didn't. My lower left leg twisted outward, along with the ski, while my upper left leg stayed straight. It didn't hurt at first, and I only noticed that something was wrong when I tried to stand on my leg and just couldn't. I won't bore you with the details, but it two surgeries later my left leg is pretty scarred. So I've been hiding my legs ever since. For those of you counting, that means I haven't worn a short, or a dress or skirt without leggings for nine years.
Most people don't really mind me doing so. A few of my coworkers made a remark about the long leggings a while ago (we're having a heath wave here), but when I said it was to cover up scars, they dropped it. Only my BF didn't drop it. He kept on telling me that they're a part of me, that I'm beautiful just the way I am and that I shouldn't hide.
I reached a breaking point on Tuesday. I just passed my practical driver's exam and felt really happy. But it also was another very hot day. I was wearing a pair of long jeans and suddenly something inside me said 'well frak this, I need shorts.' So I hopped into a sports store where they sell loads of clothes and I bought two pairs of shorts and one pair of capri pants.
I posted about this in a FB group, and finding it a bit scary. Their response was nothing but supportive. They said things like 'just think of the Mulan song. "My girl (or boy) will marvel at my strength, adore my battle scars..." I don't think scars are at all a bad thing.', ' member x is awesome and correct...scars happen and they add character. :-)', 'PSHT!!! I work with orthopedics, I've seen some AWESOME scars. If judgmental and abusive people want to have an opinion on things that don't involve them, remember we love you and their opinions weigh less. =x'. That really helped!
I'm still not entirely comfortable walking around with bare legs, I'm rather self-conscious about it but I'm hoping that it will improve over time. They're my legs, they may not be pretty, but if you don't like them you don't have to look at them.
So finally taking this big step has made me really happy.

You've got mail

What made me happy today? You've got mail!
As I mentioned in yesterday's blog, I passed my practical driver's exam on the first try. Yay me, I'm still super happy about it.
When I went to empty out my mailbox today, I noticed a bright red envelope between the rest of my mail. I immediately recognized my mom's handwriting. When I opened the envelope, I found this:

It was a card from my mom and dad congratulating me on getting my driver's license! That's also what it says: You have your driver's license! I like getting cards in the mail, and this one totally made my day :-)

Oops, I did it again!

What made me happy today? Oops, I did it again.
About half a year ago I made this post about passing my theoretical driver's exam on the first try. Two months later, I finished the necessary lessons and got to drive around on my own.
So 4 months and almost 5000 km later, the time had come to take the practical exam. Man oh man, I was nervous...
Good thing the exam was scheduled in the morning, it's not too hot at that time. Off to the driving school, to pick up the supervisor. We went and practiced the turning and parking maneuvers. Turning wasn't a problem. But I just couldn't get the darn car parked. That did not help with my nerves.
Then we headed to the exam center. Handed over the papers, paid for the exam, and took a seat while trying to get my nerves under control (and failing at that). After a few minutes the examiner came over to me. Time to get started. I'll spare you the details, but I was sweating all through the exam. I got to the exam center and thought I had failed miserably.
Even more so when he said that he wanted to go over the exam with me. He started summing up what I did wrong, and after the second one I was convinced I'd failed and have to come back. But I had only two mistakes and then he told me I passed! On the first try! I stammered 'Really?' and he nodded. My face must have been priceless. Right hand clasped over my mouth, left hand against left cheek, red face and tears in my eyes because I was so relieved. I could have hugged him. It felt as if a ton of bricks just fell off my shoulders.
According to the supervisor from the driving school it really showed that I drove so much. And that really helped. I was worried I failed because I couldn't get the car turned in three moves, but I drive a large car (Ford C-max grand) and had to execute the turn in a small street. They take the size of the car into account.
I am so happy! I passed on the first try! So bye bye learner's permit and hello real driver's license! Yay!

Look again

What made me happy today? Learning to look again.
Just read this article, you'll see what I mean.

Space

What made me happy today? Space!
Or, to be more precise, what people who have been in space said about it.
Going into space and landing on the moon are experiences that are bound to have an impact on a person. I can only imagine what it must feel like to look at our little blue dot from so far away.
Good thing that there is a cartoon to tell us what it's like, based on what Edgar Mitchell once said. But not only Edgar Mitchell has had a thing to say about seeing Earth from space, many others have too. You can find their quotes here.
I'm still hoping that one day I might be able to see our little blue dot from space myself. Who knows what the future holds...

Happy

What made me happy today? Being happy.
I'm happy. I'm tired, my feet hurt, but I'm happy.
I did a Red Cross volunteer shift yesterday. It was warm, so there was a lot of sweat, but it was pretty calm. It was also very nice to meet some new people, and to be able to help others.
Today, after way too little sleep, I went furniture shopping (yes, again) with my parents. Ikea on Saturday = hell. But it was a fruitful visit, new furniture was acquired. And it fit in dad's car too!
But over the past few weeks, I've been noticing that I'm a lot happier than I used to be. Is it because I'm making an effort to focus on the good things? Is it because the sun is finally shining? Is it because my life is great? Who knows...
All I know is that I'm happy. And that makes me happy :-)

Have a laugh

What made me happy today? Having a laugh...
.. at the expense of my own country :-)
Today, I stumbled across this article in an online newspaper. The article features a video, which contains joke after joke about Belgium. I laughed so hard!
The video was made by someone who, in light of the upcoming national holiday, the abdication of Albert 2 and coronation of Filip (or Philippe, that's still being debated), felt like there was not enough Belgian pride. Not sure this will help, but hey, it made me laugh :-)
Belgium. Known for it's beer, waffles, sprouts, the Smurfs, Tintin, chocolate, and fries. One of the first countries to legalize same-sex marriage worldwide. The tiny country that firmly said 'no' against invading Iraq. The country that currently holds the world record for longest government formation.
And while we're on the topic of governments, we don't have one. Nope, we have 6. Yes, you read that right. 6 governments. We have a: federal government, Flemish government, French community government, Walloon regional government, Brussels-capital regional government and German community government. Which is probably why we didn't take to the streets when the federal government wasn't there.
All in all it's a nice country to live in. And yes, we cheer when Hugh Laurie mentions Belgium on the television. But that's because he mentioned Belgium ;-)

Hot hot hot

What made me happy today? It's hot hot hot!
Oh my, it's 35°C in the sun outside. In the shade it's around 28°C-29°C, and in my apartment it's about 26°C.
I'm lucky enough to work in an office with air conditioning and indoor parking. That's got me covered for most of the day!
But what do you do when you don't have these luxuries? Well, here's a few tips and tricks I've learned over the years:

- if you have blinds or curtains where you live, make sure to close them when the sun is shining on that side of your residence.
- keep the windows closed during the day, open them during the night.
- drink plenty of water.
- anything with mint in it will make you feel refreshed in an instant.
- dress light, and keep what you wear to a bare minimum. If this is possible of course, I have a dress code at work, so I wear more than I'd like.
- take a shower. Or get a cheap spray bottle, fill with water and mist yourself with it.
- eat less, but more frequently. Instead of hot foods, try lighter summer fare including frequent small meals or snacks containing cold fruit or low fat dairy products. As an added benefit, you won't have to cook next to a hot stove.
- spicy foods and warm drinks. I know this seems counter-intuitive, but they'll make you sweat. And when your sweat evaporates, you'll feel cooler.
- think cool thoughts. Focusing on how hot it is will only make you feel warmer.
- avoid any strenuous activities, if possible.
- stay in the shade if you can. If not, make sure to wear sunscreen, and regularly re-apply it.
- still too hot? Go see a movie! Most movie theaters have air conditioning. So do lots of shops!
- store lotions or cosmetic toners in the refrigerator.
- keep plastic bottles of water in the freezer; grab one when you're ready to go outside. As the ice melts, you'll have a supply of cold water with you.
- avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration.
- use your common sense!

Hope this helps you stay cool :-)

Mid-year review

What made me happy today? My mid-year review!
Yup, it's that time of year again. Time to see how you're doing at work. I was rather nervous, because I was recently promoted, and got a different boss. But when I told my boyfriend about being nervous, he said that I had nothing to worry about. I hadn't gotten any negative feedback on my work so far, I actually received some compliments on how I was doing!
Turns out he was absolutely right. My boss started my review off with 'you've taken a super-start' and then followed it by saying I'm a hard worker, I'm driven, enthusiastic, result-oriented and all that jazz! She also complimented me on being able to get the hang of my new role fast, and in a challenging time (the projects I'm working on are both in crucial phases). And she said that I should continue like this, which I fully intend to!
I was so happy to hear this! Getting appreciated for what you do is so nice!

Name that fandom

What made me happy today? Name that fandom!
Today wasn't exactly a good day. I got up this morning and managed to make a wrong move, which caused my left knee to hurt. A lot. Again. For those of you who don't know me that well, I've had a skiing mishap ages ago and two surgeries, which didn't help much. And at work things were going haywire as well.
Until one of my managers sent an email asking if anyone knew some magic to solve our problem. Before I had even thought it through, I'd sent back an email stating that a time-turner would be very helpful as well. Sadly, the entire stock of Time-Turners, located in the Time Room, in the Ministry of Magic was destroyed during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in 1996.
My manager sent me an email back exclaiming 'Quite!' (he's British fyi). Turns out he's a fan too!
I love Harry Potter, and this little email conversation made my day!

Best parents ever, part 2

What made me happy today? The fact that I have the best parents ever :-)
I know, again. But it's true!
Today, I had to be in Genk for work. As my parents don't live far from there, we decided to meet. And we went looking at some furniture, which was fun. As odd as that may sound. Who knew that shopping for a bed with your parents could be such fun. My dad even found the perfect bed for me! A bunk bed shaped like a fire truck! Too bad it was too small...
After that we went and got a bite to eat, and talked some more. We had a lot of fun :-)
So yeah, I really do have the best parents!

Summer sale

What made me happy today? Summer sale!
There's a summer sale going on at Steam! And they have some great offers going, like Portal 2 at 50% off. So head on over there, maybe they'll have something for you as well. And while you're on Steam, feel free to add me, I'm listed as Elentariël.
Needless to say, this is making me one very happy gamer girl :-)

Butter me up

What made me happy today? Butter me up!
We all have our good days and our bad days. And on those bad days, we can use someone to cheer us up. Luckily, I have some great friends and a super duper BF who are always up to that task.
But what if you're alone? In that case, the internet can help! Butter me up is a great example! Take a look, and you'll feel a lot better in an instant :-)
Not better yet? It that case, you might want to remember one of these 27 things :-)

These are the days

What made me happy today? Having a great day!
Wow, I had an amazing day. Slept well, got to work early as there was almost no traffic. Then, around ten, an email came. It announced that one of my colleagues was celebrating her birthday and had brought strawberry mousses for everyone! Super tasty :-)
In the afternoon, pie was announced through email. Another colleague was working her last day and had brought pie! I had a piece of apple pie, really tasty :-)
My day was super productive, so my boss let me go home an hour early. I had already worked a lot this week, so she felt like I earned it. And when I came home, I found a note in my mailbox, saying that a package had arrived for me. So I headed to the post office to pick it up. When I opened it, I found a note inside, thanking me for my order :-D
Now, I gotten more notes in packages, so it's not the first time that that happened. But this one is special, because it's hand-written. Awesome! Thanks Luci Daum design :-)
Now I'm going to unwind by doing a Star Trek Voyager marathon. If you don't hear from me again, I'm lost in the Delta quadrant ;-)

Summer snacks

What made me happy today? Summer snacks.
I had a day off today (Bank holiday), so I took some time to do some shopping. It was a lot less busy in the supermarket than in the weekend :-)
It also gave me the time to pick out some of my favorite summer snacks. I posted one of them a while ago. The other ones are fruit! Nice and healthy :-)
Summer is a great time for fruits like peaches, nectarines and cherries. I don't buy cherries at the supermarket, I have a tree from which I get more than enough. But I managed to score some very delicious yellow nectarines and peaches. And a melon.
I sure love these healthy summer snacks! What's your favorite?

Surprise!

What made me happy today? I don't have to work tomorrow!
Turns out tomorrow is a bank holiday for my company. I didn't know, and only found out about it 20 minutes before going home. Nice surprise!
And I've had a great evening too, went for a walk and ice cream with my BF. And the weather was very nice :-)

What made me happy today? This.
Just watch it. If you're the sensitive type, keep a tissue ready, I sure needed one.

Frozen treat

What made me happy today? A frozen treat!
Yup, summer seems to have arrived! It's warm and sunny, which means it's also time for frozen treats.
I love ice cream as much as the next person, but from time to time I find myself reaching for those childhood classic summer treats. Like an orange juice popsicle (home-made), or...
A frozen Petit Gervais! They even sell them along with plastic popsicle sticks now. Just stick one through the lid, pop in the freezer for a few hours and hey presto: frozen treat! Ideal to cool down on a hot day like this :-)

Despicable me 2

What made me happy today? Despicable me 2!
Yesterday evening I decided to treat myself to a movie. I went and saw Despicable me 2. I liked the first one and had heard good things about the second one. Besides, it was warm and the movie theater has air-conditioning. One ticket, a popcorn and drink later I was ready for the fun.
And I wasn't disappointed :-) It's a funny movie. I'm not going to spoil anything for those of you who haven't seen it yet, but it's great fun for the whole family.
Afterwards I decided to grab some sushi for dinner. But it was way to much, so I had the rest of the sushi for breakfast today. And in the afternoon a friend called to invite me for a swim and BBQ. Now that was an offer I couldn't refuse!
I hope you had a great weekend too!

Saturday sun

What made me happy today? Enjoying the Saturday sun.
We're finally having some great weather here! It's about time too. I enjoyed the nice weather today while going for my daily Saturday morning coffee :-)
There were a lot of people out and about, so I guess I'm not the only one taking advantage of the nice weather!

Friday fun

What made me happy today? Having a lot of fun at work.
Friday! What's not to like? Especially when there's pizza for lunch, along with a lot of laughing :-)
Yup, the hospital ward I was working at today has a tradition of doing a 'greasy Friday' lunch (vettige vrijdag in Dutch). Basically, instead of bringing a lunch from home or getting something from the cafeteria, they order something greasy: pizza, burgers, fries etc. I love pizza, so I chose one. It was delicious! And it was loads of fun too!
Hope your Friday was ans great as mine!

Power

What made me happy today? Some powerful words.
Work is keeping me rather busy, and I have a sore throat. I hope I'm not getting sick. But then I stumbled across this article, and it cheered me up.
Partially because the quotes are so true, and partially because I have fond memories of some of the movies quoted in there. Personal favorite? The last one!
Yes, I confess, I'm a huge Star Wars fan :-)

Exciting news

What made me happy today? A day filled with exciting news.
Usually I check the papers online during my coffee-break at work. Today, I was rather busy, so I didn't get the change. So I was rather surprised when I heard a radio host say: 'And we'll give you an update about the situation with the king in a few minutes.'. What situation with the king?
Well, king Albert is abdicating the throne. It's a first in Belgian history. Leopold the 3rd was forced to give up the throne, and all other kings died. Rather young I might add, which might be why there's nothing about abdication in the Belgian constitution. But I'm sure we'll solve it, in the way only Belgians can :-) (okay, that joke is only funny if you know a thing or two about Belgium but I just had to make it)
And then there is of course the whole situation in Egypt. Mursi has refused to step down, and it seems like the army is gearing up to stage a coup there. I'm curious to see where that'll lead them.

But of course, I found a solution for both things: we just send Albert to Egypt ;-)

What made me happy today? Lucky shots!
These incredible once in a lifetime shots! Take a look, and be amazed!

Zero punctuation

What made me happy today? Zero punctuation!
It's not a big secret that I'm a bit of a gamer girl. So imagine my delight when the BF introduced me to a Youtube channel specialized in funny game reviews!
I'm talking about 'zero punctuation' on 'the escapist' Youtube channel! Go take a look, you'll see what I mean :-)
