Crossing the finish line!

What made me happy today? Finished!
I did my exam today, so this means my two week course is now over :-) Of course, I still have to wait a week until I get my grades.
But until that time I can relax a little again!
There is no feeling like the feeling of crossing the finish line. You're there, you made it, you did it. Time to catch your breath and relax. Which is precisely what I'm going to do tonight, with some video games, a movie and a cup of tea :-)

DIY

What made me happy today? Fixing a cupboard door my father deemed unfixable.
A while ago, my parents brought some extra furniture over for my appartment. One of those things was a cupboard with a special shelve for my tv and PS2. It's pretty old, but still in a great condition. But, according to my father, the right door was a bit damaged. It would open and close just fine, if you do it slowly. Sadly, again according to my father there was nothing that could be done about it.
Well, I can be a bit clumsy at times. Lo and behold, when opening the cupboard yesterday I accidentaly pulled the door out of the grooves. (weird system, but it's an old cupboard) Of course, it would not get back in the grooves, because the door was too big to fit.
It only took me two minutes to figure out what I needed to do. So while taking a quick study break today, I broke out my Gorilla Grip with an assortment of hex-keys. By applying the 'righty tighty, lefty loosey pronciple I lowered both metal rounds that keep the door in the grooves, popped it back in, put both metal rounds back in place and viola: one fixed cupboard door.
Sorry to say dad, but you were wrong. I fixed the original problem too! Turned out that one of the metal rounds at the top of the door had dropped a bit into the door, causing the problem my dad deemed unfixable.
I can do DIY! Yay :-)

The final effort.

What made me happy today? It was the last day of class! I survived!
All that is left now is an entire day to study tomorrow and take the assessment on Thursday... The trainers assured us that we'll all do a good job. I really hope so. I'm certainly going to try really hard!
So here's to putting in that final bit of effort :-) Hopefully I can reap the benefits soon!

Score!

What made me happy today? Getting my team's score up!
We're having a quiz in my course. My team has been behind all of last week. But today I managed to get the score up so we're now ahead of the other team :-)
Plus, my answer to one of the questions was better than the one the trainers had. Totally made my day :-D

(again, my apologies for the short post. Lots of studying and homework...)

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

What made me happy today? Finally finishing all episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (warning: link contains spoilers)
64 episodes. Took me months to see them all. It was totally worth it.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is made from pure epic. Add a dash of drama, male muscles, two young alchemists on a quest to get their bodies back, a passing housewife, chimeras, homunculi, strangers skilled in martial arts, a few deaths, some scheming and plotting, a coup, a plan to destroy everything and a lot more good stuff. Stir well, and viola. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is born.
Fun fact: the voices of the Elric brothers are done by women. Made me giggle.
Yes, I like anime. I have mentioned it in several previous posts.
The reason I love this anime so much is because of the character development and of course the amazing ride this series is. I needed a lot of tissues for the last few episodes. Sensitive souls are hereby warned...
Check it out if you like, let me know what you think!

Best parents ever!

What made me happy today? The fact that I have the best parents ever :-)
I wrote about it a few days ago. I get a lot of support from a lot of people and that makes me happy.
I'm very busy studying and learning to drive on the side. It's all going well, but right now all of this leaves me with very little time for chores. Good thing I have awesome parents! They are coming over tomorrow to pick up some laundry and bring me my favorite soup! Yes, my mom is making me my favorite soup. She asked me if I wanted any food when she called. And I said 'thanks, but no thanks'. So she asked me if I wanted some soup. And I almost didn't dare to ask for it, but I asked her if she could please make my favorite soup. She said that it wasn't a problem, she was going to the store any way. So tomorrow I'm getting my favorite, home-made by my mom soup! How great is that?
But it's not just because they offer to help me with my laundry and bring me food that they are great, it's because they always support me. They're always there for me. Always have been, and I hope they will continue to be here for a very long time.
Mom, dad, I know you're probably not reading this, but thank you for eveything you've ever done for me. I may not always have been the perfect daughter but I really, really love that you always supported me in everything!

Cookie!

What made me happy today? Cookie!
I had to make a quick run to the supermarket today. On Friday, they often have little stands with free samples. The couple passing the stand in front of me politely declined the free cookie they were offered. but when the lady asked if this cute little miss wanted one I could hardly say no, now could I?
She called me cute! And little miss! Plus, it was a big and delicious chocolate chip cookie! Made my whole day.

That's it fir today. have a nice weekend, I'm going to dive back into my books!

Taking the night off

What made me happy today? Deciding to take the night off from studying.
Tomorrow is a study day, followed by the weekend. Plus, I'm exhausted so in my opinion it's better to relax a bit and get an early night. I will be more productive after a good nights' sleep :-)
I'm probably just going to watch some anime and play some video games. Usually I like to read a book, but I've been doing so much reading these past four days...
The course is going well, it's very interesting, but again also very exhausting. I get a lot of compliments from the teachers. Then again, I'm putting in a lot of hours. Classes are about 8 hours long, after which I still have to do my homework and reading assignments. But doing them really helps, as it makes me able to better understand what's being said in class.
So I think I deserve the night off :-)

Support

What made me happy today? Getting so much support!
As you all know by now I'm taking a two week course. It's intensive. The days are long, it's mentally very tiring etc.
But luckily I get a lot of support from my friends, family and colleagues! I'm so happy about that :-)
As I've mentioned before, I live quite a distance from my family. But knowing that they're thinking of me, wishing me good luck and offering me to help when I need it makes me happy! I have a great family :-)
So many of my friends and colleagues have wished me good luck, and some colleagues have even offered to help me with questions and things like that.
It's great to know that so many people support you in your endeavours! That truly makes me happy :-)

Being Hermione Granger

What made me happy today? Being Hermione Granger!
Or at least feeling like her.
Remember this scene from the first Harry Potter movie? That's the feeling I had in class today.
Little back-story here: I'm currently taking a two week course, followed by an exam to get promoted at work. I'm someone that likes getting good grades (always have, always will). So I pay attention in class, do my homework and reading assignments.
Today in class I really felt like I was on a roll. I knew the answer to most of the questions, so my hand (virtual, as it's all digital) was up a lot, up to the point where one of the teachers assured me that he was not ignoring me, but he just wanted to see if the rest of the class was understanding everything too. Too bad you can't hop up and down in your seat in the virtual class :-)
I just hope it keeps going this well!

(I'm using my break to post this, otherwise this post would be up really late today)

Life hacks

What made me happy today? Coming across a great set of tips!
In need of some useful life hacks? Or maybe some body hacks? Check out the links! There's some useful stuff in there :-)

(apologies for the short blog, my course has me swamped with homework)

Epicness

What made me happy today? Let me answer that with another question: what do you get when you ask the Gainax studio, the studio that produced Neon Genesis Evangelion (and a bunch of other anime) to create a saturday morning breakfast cartoon? Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, also known as Gurren Lagann.
This mecha anime is 27 episodes (and two movies) of pure, sheer epicness. If you have never seen it, I strongly suggest you do. But heed my words: do not watch the last 8 episodes + the 2 movies in one go. You will cry, a lot; you will feel very drained and the only thing that you'll want to do is crawl into bed. I made that mistake. Not fun. Unless, of course, you are immune to this or like it.
I really love TTGL. The drawing style is neat and clean. The characters are very well developed and really evole throughout the series. The storyline is extremely epic, even though it all starts small. It ends on a huge scale. There's a lot of humor in the story, but also drama etc. It's hard to describe, as so many emotions come in to play at times. But be prepared, there are going to be episodes when you'll need a tissue. Either because you're laughing so hard or crying. And to top it all off: Boota! Don't know who Boota is? Watch the series!
If you haven't seen it, this may be a spoiler: I really do not like Viral. Gives me the creeps.
Another major plus for this anime is that (again, potential spoiler here) not everyone of the main cast lives until the end of the series. I'm not telling you more, just watch it. You can thank me later :-)

I did it!

What made me happy today? Finally winning the hoverboard race in Ratchet and Clank.
It has cost me blood, sweat and tears. Not to mention a lot of profanity, yelling at the screen and gritting my teeth.
But after 37 tries I finally won the hoverboard race in the first Ratchet an Clank game.
Why did that make me so happy? Well, it's the first time in ten years I've been able to do it myself. UsuallyI had to ask someone to help me. But not this time. I decided to see this one through myself. And when I finally won, I really jumped up and down with pure joy. It may not seem like much to be happy about, but again: 10 years..
Gaming rules!

Millennium Actress

What made me happy today? Millennium Actress! (warning: link contains spoilers)
It's a 2001 anime and really worth watching. The movie tells the story of a man making a documentary about his favorite actress, by following her life and the movies she acted in.
The drawing style is not the one I usually like, but it really grew on me. Besides, for some reason I found the drawing style that was used to be appropriate in the end. It's a very gripping movie. I got sucked into the story pretty fast. I'm not going to give too much away about the story, you should just watch it.
Let me add another warning here: if you're someone who cries easily, make sure to keep some tissues at hand. You'll need them. Well, in any case I did.

(apologies for the short post, but my books are waiting for me)

Little shops

What made me happy today? Little shops!
It's been a very long, hard day at work (lots of things went more or less ploin-shaped). So it was kind of hard for me to come up with a happy blog for today. At least, until I decided to treat myself to a latte. That gave me the idea of treating you all to a list of 5 of my favorite shops in Leuven!

- koffie Onan: yes, I've mentioned them before. But I really love that little coffeeshop. It's a small place, the door creaks and scrapes the floor a bit. But ah, the smell, the atmosphere, the tea, the coffee! Lovely! And the people that work there are always very friendly and happy to help you or give advice! I usually go there once a week for a latte to go. It's always handed to me with a smile and a wink, followed by a heartfelt 'enjoy!.

- Jenna: it's a shop that offers a variety of things. Clothing, jewels, watches and piercings. Most of my piercings were done by the ladies that own the shop. I always have a lot of fun when I stop by their shop. They're funny women who insist on calling me 'Miss'. And good at what they do too. If you go in for a piercing, they'll explain to you what they're doing every step of the way. And if you have a problem afterwards, they're always happy to help. It must be said that the only problem I've ever had with a piercing done by them was being unable to open the ring to replace it.. Plus, they have some very cute gothic clothing too!

- de Spelfanaat: if you're looking for games, RPGs, Magic, Warhammer, Warhammer 40K and other (board)game or RPG related stuff, de Spelfanaat should be your first stop. The guys that own the place are really, really good at what they do. They know every game in the store, and can often give you a lot of advice on the games as they've most likely played them themselves. They'll even offer you a demosntration if they have a game that's open. But I usually stop by for the Warhammer 40K books. The first time I did that, the guy behind the register's mouth almost fell open. A girl reading Warhammer 40K? I know... But by now they're used to it. Looking for something they don't have in the store? Believe me when I say these guys will go the extra mile to find it and order it for you. They once spent over 20 minutes to try and get me a book (yes, another Warhammer 40K one). In the end, it didn't work. Why? Well, the book wasn't publisher yet. little mistake on my part. But that just goes to show you how much they'll do for their customer.

- Penguin Village: looking for manga, anime or related merchandise? Penguin Village is your place to be! Another cute little shop with a great owner. Want to order something special? No problem! Looking for some hard-to-find manga or anime? No problem. Looking for something new, but don't know what? No problem! The owner will try to help you as much as he can! What I like most is that he seems to have read / seen everything he sells. When I went in there quite a while ago (I think it was a year and a half ago) to buy the Pandora Hearts manga, we spent 20 minutes just talking about it! Or the time I bought the 'Read or Die' dvd I thought he'd keel over of sheer surprise. He never thought he'd sell that dvd... I love it ^^

- Metalzone: last, but definitely not least on this list is the Metalzone. The Metalzone opened in Leuven in 2006. If you're looking for anything metal-related, this is your one-stop-shop! Wim is always happy to help you. And if you're looking for something new but don't know what, leave it to Wim. Just tell him what else you like and he'll be able to point you to at least two other bands he'll think you like. So far, he's never been wrong. You're also always served with a smile and as a bonus you get a nice little chat. I hope the Metalzone stays here for a long time, I really love that shop :-)

So should you ever find yourself in Leuven, please make sure to visit one (or more) of these shops! They're really worth it!

Webcomic Wednesday 2

What made me happy today? Dominic Deegan has gone full-scale epic!
Dominic Deegan: Oracle For Hire is a webcomic created and written by Michael 'Mookie' Terracciano. (DD FB page)
Months ago a friends gave me the link to this webcomic. I was having a hard time dealing with a lot of stuff and in some way Dominic Deegan allowed me to escape from it all for a bit. But that's not the only reason I like it.
It has puns, oh so many puns; epicness; magic; love; betrayal; so many different races and places; family; a multitude of jokes; the occasional dash of sadness and so much more. I'm not going to tell you too much about it, just go and check it out for yourself.
Sad thing is: this comic has been going for ten (!) years, and will end somewhere in May this year. That means that the wrap-up of the story is starting. And boy, oh boy, is it epic! Every morning I check and see what happens next, and it just gets more amazing each day. I can't wait to see how it will all end! Too bad the comic only updates on weekdays, especially because Michael has a tendency to end the week with a cliffhanger.
One suggestion: if you decide to check it out: start from the beginning (here) so you don't miss anything!
So long story short: you should totally check out Dominic Deegan! I love it, it has helped me through some rough times! So thank you, Michael Terracciano for creating this wonderful webcomic, I can't wait to see your next project :-)

Say cheese!

What made me happy today? Stumbling across this wonderful article.
I have curves, so I could really relate. And it made me happy.

(sorry for the short post today, but I'm really swamped by work and my personal life at the moment)

Bring it, world!

What made me happy today? Feeling so ready to take on the world!
Let's be honest here for a second: nobody likes Monday. I mean, you just had two days off from work; you got to sleep in and stay up late. And if your weekend was anything like mine, it was an awesome one :-)
And then, at 5.30 in the morning the alarm goes off. It's pretty cold outside, with a chilly wind and snow. So I bundled up and walked to the station to get on the bus. Which, of course, was late (snow in Belgium). When I got to work and opened my emails, I found out that somewhere something went pretty wrong and I had to fix it. Which basically meant 4 - 5 hours of re-work. I could have gotten angry or sad about it; I could have complained or I could have let my head hang. Instead I decided to put on my big girl panties and boots :-) and I got a cup of coffee. After which I started working on the problem. And turns out it wasn't that much of a mess at all! Success!
That basically made me feel ready to take on the world. Well, at least ready to give Peter and Dilbert a swift kick in the behind. Which I totally did! Amazing for a Monday :-)

Mythbusters

What made me happy today? Mythbusters!
Science combined with explosions, destruction, crashes, guns, high speeds, some controversy and just the sheer epic awesomeness of the show? What's not to like?
I mean, they do the stuff you've always wondered about. You could of course try it yourself, but you'd probably get seriously injured or killed. They are the experts and know what they're doing. Well, most of the time anyway. Sometimes it goes wrong. And then it's still funny to watch :-)
The Mythbusters also have a great dynamic between them. And you have the recurring themes: Jamie's moustache, Adam hurts himself, Tori tries a silly stunt which leads to a spectacular crash without him getting hurt that bad; Grant builds a robor ot remote controlled thing; Kari doesn't like bugs / dead pigs and vomits; the whole team has that 'I can't believe this is my job' or 'I have no idea what we're doing' moment; Buster has a rough day on the job.
Ah Buster. Where would Mythbusters be without Buster? Besides, it's fun to watch Buster being dropped from a crane on his belly, just to see how much damage it would do! In case you were wondering: a lot.
Or the catchphrases, like: I reject your reality and substitute my own; when in doubt : C4; failure is always an option. There's many more of course, but you should see (well, hear) yourself!
Blowing up stuff, crashing vehicles, shooting guns etc. has to be the coolest job ever. And all in the name of science! Plus, if they do it, you don't have to try it yourself.
On top of all that, you actually learn stuff on the show as well. Mythbusters has saved lives on more than one occasion. The boy who saved the man from the train, more than one person that got out safely out of their car after it landed in the water. All of that because of Mythbusters.
They always say that you should't try any of the things you see on the show at home. But I'll admit to doing one experiment myself. The Mentos and Diet Coke experiment. I only did it because the Mythbusters said it was okay. And it's a pretty harmless experiment.
There are so many great moments in the show that listing my favorites would take me a really long time. So if you've never seen an episode of Mythbusters, be sure to check it out. It's great!

Vroom vroom

What made me happy today? I had my first practical driving lesson!
Today, I went to the driving school to make an appointment for my first lesson. Much to my surprise they had a spot open in the early afternoon. Well, why wait? So I decided to go ahead and take it. I was there anyway. Oh boy, was I nervous...
But it went well! I had a great instructor who explained everything wery well. He gave me good tips and clearly told me what to do when. Best part was how he relieved my anxiety. I admitted that I was very nervous about learning to drive. His response? He said 'well, I can control the car from my side, so if anything goes wrong I can intervene. If it still goes wrong, you get to beat me up, because that means I didn't see it either'. Made me laugh so hard.
As it turns out, they usually do two or three lessons on the practice terrain (in this case the industrial park in Haasrode) before they take you out on the road. But at the end of the lesson he instructed me to make a left at the next crossing, and then go right. Which meant going out on the road. That's right. He thought I did a good job, so he put me on the road and made me drive home. My palms were very sweaty, but I made it without an accident! Yay!
Learning to drive might be going better than expected. Who knew? Well, I can't wait for my next lesson!

List

What made me happy today? A whole list of things!
One year ago today, my goddaughter was born :-) She is the most precious, amazing little girl ever. It's fantastic to see how she's evolving and learning new things all the time. I love her so much and I'm glad my sister and brother in law chose me to be her godmother!
I got a very tasty sandwich at work, for free! Who doesn't like free food?
Plus, my arm is hurting less after yesterday's scan. 40 minutes in the same position with a coil around my elbow and a weighted bag on my hand. Au. But it has subsided back to the old levels so it's bearable again.
And finally, it's Friday 3 cheers for the weekend!
Hope you have a good one, I know I will :-)

Rethink

What made me happy today? This amazing breast cancer awareness video!
Enjoy it and please share!
Creating awareness about breast cancer is very important. Learn how to do the self-exam and do it. If anything is out of the ordinary, get it checked out. You're not to young, you're not being silly. If you have doubts, it's better to be safe than sorry.

(sorry for the short blog, but I had a scan of my elbow today and it hurts a whole lot now)

How may I help you?

What made me happy today? Customer service that actually helps you!
Like everyone I've had some experience with customer service departments. Some contacts are okay, others downright horrible or frustrating. There's times when you get transferred to a different department 15 times and still they can't help you. But the one that takes the cake was the mentality of my ISP's customer service: if it's broke you better fix it yourself 'cause we're not going to help.
But today was so different. I had to call my insurance company, to get a claim corrected. Kind of scary, because my last horrible experience was not fully digested yet... Turns out they gave me the wrong number. I started getting scared. But I had a friendly guy on the line, and he gave me the correct number first time around. Hmmm, maybe I got lucky I thought. Nope. The lady I spoke to next was extremely polite, and immediately helped me with what I needed. No muss, no fuss, no argument, no frustration, no discussion, no endless transfers and 'on-hold' music. Nope, none of that today.
Maybe I just got lucky. Maybe I just got the right people on the line. Maybe they were all having a really great day, who knows? Or maybe, for once in my life I had good luck :-)
It doesn't really matter if I had good luck or not. What matters is that this experience made me happy all day :-)

Think you're having a bad day?

What made me happy today? Instant cheer-up stuff.
I had a very hard day at work. A lot of urgent and unexpected stuff popped up. Good thing I'm always well prepared for those cases :-)
So during my morning coffee (ok, tea) break I came across this little gem on my Facebook.
It kind of puts things in perspective in a funny way. You might be having a bad day, but there's most likely always going to be people that are having a horrible day. Plus, it made me laugh. And laughing is good for you :-)

Now I usually try to keep my blog posts happy, but I wanted to share this picture with you too:

I'm not going to become all preachy about how we are lucky etc. but just think about it a moment... It kind of gives you a different perspective, doesn't it?

Small steps

What made me happy today? Small steps.
Rome wasn't built in one day. Change does not come overnight and it can be very scary. But sometimes it's necessary to change.
I'm not talking about global changes or political changes here. Nope, I'm talking about changes on a personal level. Like kicking a bad habit to the curb, or trying to change something you feel is holding you back. I found that the best way to go about changing such a thing for me is taking it one day at a time, with small steps.
Of course, I'm not denying that there will be times when you have to bite the bullet, roll the hard six and just change something drastically. This mostly goes for when situations are causing you harm or put you in danger; in any way possible.
The best example I can give you is this blog :-) The previous two years were sad and hard. And I got the feeling that I started focussing on the negative, bad and sad things in this world too much. So I decided to change that, by focussing on one thing that makes me happy each day. I have to say, it's working.
I'm a girl that can feel as if she's carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. But over the past few months, and for a big part thanks to this blog, I've realised that I'm not helping anyone with that. Besides, it's only making me feel worse. And it's not helping anyone either.
The way I view the world and life is not the only thing I want to change about myself, but I'm not going to go into that right now. Once I manage those changes, you can be sure I'll make a blog post about it.
As you can see, I'm trying to change my outlook on life, one day at a time, with small steps. If you like it, you can stick around for my journey and see where I end up.

Fifty shades

What made me happy today? iO Tillett Wright's Fifty Shades of Gay TEDx Women talk.
You can watch the video here
Just watch it, and share it. It really touched me...

I realized pretty early in life that love is love. For me, it has never mattered between who this love was (of course, consent and legality are important, but that's another thing). Love is love. It's the same butterflies, happy intoxicated feeling, nerves or pain for everyone. No matter your sexual orientation. No matter if you identify as gay, lesbian, bi, straight or anything in between. Like iO says in the video: 'not enough boxes'. I don't like boxes, my brain does not think in boxes :-)
A person's sexual orientation really does not matter to me. I have gay friends, straight friends, and friends that identify as somewhere in between. They're still my friends. I like them for their personalities.
And for those of you who are waiting on my coming out: not going to happen. It's not because I got my hair cut short that I am a lesbian. I don't like that prejudice.
When it comes to equal rights for gay people, I am lucky to be living in Belgium. Belgium was the second country worldwide to legalize same-sex marriage. Wow.
And on occasion you see heart-warming stories about gay people coming out in the news, or just plain funny ones.
If you are struggling with your sexual orientation, you are not alone. But there are people who can help you. In Belgium, you can take a look at this website. And there are a lot of similar initiatives in other countries, just Google them.
Just remember this: no matter if you are LBGTQ or straight, or any shade of gay; somebody will always love you. And even if it does not seem that way, just remember that it gets better. It really does.

Friday

What made me happy today? It's finally Friday!
I've had a long, hard week at work. So this week I'm extra happy about the fact that it's Friday :-)
It's the best day of the week. The weekend is still ahead of you. You don't have to go to work the following morning, if you're lucky. Having worked as a nurse for 4.5 years, I know what it's like to have to get up to go to work on a Saturday morning. Not much fun. So since I changed jobs over a year a go, I now know the joys of having a full weekend.
Plus, Friday usually means friends, pizza and games for me. A great way to start of the weekend, wouldn't you say?
Have a great day and a fantastic weekend!
