Catch your ZZzzz's

What made me happy today? Catch your ZZzzz's.
Wow, I slept so well last night! I only woke up at 10.30 this morning. That almost never happens to me :-) Must be my advancing age, or a fluke / glitch / bug. So I decided to take myself for a long overdue haircut. Which was about the funniest one I'd ever gotten. As I'm planning to grow my hair out again, the hairdresser only cut the front and back, not the sides :-)
Once my hair was done, I got a cup of coffee at koffie Onan. Then I walked back home, as it's a lovely Indian summer day. Now I'm going to get ready for my birthday party with my friends this evening!
Enjoy your Saturday!

The (un)usual

What made me happy today? Getting a side of unusual with my usual!
It's Saturday. For me, that's another word for grocery shopping, chores and a trip into Leuven city. So I made my usual stop at koffie Onan first. By now, they know what I want. Latte of the week, to go. There was one other customer waiting for her drinks. Suddenly she says 'Invader Zim!'. Took me a second to figure out what she meant (didn't have my coffee yet). She was referring to the t-shirt I was wearing. The culprit is below, although mine has a black background.
So we talked about how great Gir and Invader Zim are for a bit. I don't know who she was, but she kind of made my day!
Then it was on to the Metalzone. Scored three new cd's: Sonata Arctica - for the sake of revenge, Queensrÿche - Queensrÿche (the new one) and Queensrÿche - operation: mindcrime. That made my day even more!
Yup, my Saturday was great! How was yours?

Saturday sun

What made me happy today? Enjoying the Saturday sun.
We're finally having some great weather here! It's about time too. I enjoyed the nice weather today while going for my daily Saturday morning coffee :-)
There were a lot of people out and about, so I guess I'm not the only one taking advantage of the nice weather!

Balance

What made me happy today? Balance!
I worked from home today. The company I work for allows us to do so, and I love it!
Working from home means not getting stuck in traffic, a better work - private life balance, getting more done, drinking my own fantastic coffee and just feeling more relaxed.
Of course it has downsides too. I have to remind myself when it's time to stop working and procrastinating is very tempting. But I had a lot to do, so no procrastinating for me.
I'm really lucky I can do this on occasion, as it really makes me happy :-)

Coffee facts

What made me happy today? This!
While sipping a tasty cup of French press coffee (thanks Koffie Onan for the delicious coffee beans), I stumbled across the article with 15 facts about coffee. I even learned a few things! For example, I never knew that instant coffee was invented by a fellow Belgian!
Delicious coffee, and a great coffee-related comic! How could I not be happy?!

Coffee minds think alike!

What made me happy today? Getting served some coffee that was precisely right.
I was working in a hospital today. Around noon, I really started feeling like having a cup of coffee. So i asked the person I was working with if I could get one. She offered to get me one. But not before asking how I take my coffee.
Now hospital coffee is definitely not my favorite kind of coffee. It's usually pretty strong and has an edgy taste. So I told her I like a lot of milk in my coffee.
And guess what? She brought me back the perfect mug of coffee! The right amount of milk, the right temperature and everything. As it turns out, she and I take our (hospital) coffee the same way. Kind of made my day :-)

Fun with function

What made me happy today? Being able to function on 3 hours of sleep.
I don't know if you read it on my Facebook or Twitter today, but yesterday I tore a muscle in my shoulder / clavicle. Kind of painful. Because of this I only got 3 hours of sleep.
But looking on the bright side: I've always been a pretty bad sleeper, as I've mentioned before. And in situations like this, the fact that I'm used to functioning on little sleep really helps. Even though I've recently started sleeping better, I'm still able to function pretty much normal after a bad night. Add a cup (or two, now they fixed the coffee machine at work) of coffee or tea, and I'm good to go.
Here's hoping my shoulder / clavicle heals fast, because a torn muscle is rather painful. But hey, I'm staying positive!

Safe journey

What made me happy today? I arrived at my hotel in one piece!
I had to fly out to Amsterdam today. I have no problem with flying, although I'm not particularly fond of the take off and landing parts. that's because my ears tend to pop. A lot. And it can get quite painful...
But I made it there safely! And I got to enjoy a cup of Starbucks at the airport (not saying coffee, it was more of a coffee-flavored drink).
The flight itself went very smooth and was pretty short. They served a small snack on board, which is always nice :-)
So hurray for a safe journey! Now I'm going to wash the airport and airplane off me.

Suspended coffee

What made me happy today? Finding out that the 'suspended coffee' is spreading!
A while ago this article crossed my Facebook newsfeed. (Dutch version here)I found it to be a touching story. But being the skeptic that I am, I decided to check Snopes first. Turns out this story is true. It seems to have started in Italy, and is spreading to other countries fast. Facebook seems to be playing a big role in this.
So it totally made my day when I noticed that even Belgium is starting to catch on! And it's not only coffee, today I also stumbled across an article that mentions 'suspended fries' in the Brussels region. This last article is in Dutch but it boils down to the owner of 'Fritkot Bompa' saying that coffee isn't doing a lot, people need food as well. So he started using a coupon system. People can buy a coupon for a portion of fries, to give to a person who needs it. It's an alternative for people who don't want to give money to the needy or homeless, but want to help in other ways. He's hoping his initiative will catch on as well.
You can find a list of participants here. Please note that this is a list for the Netherlands and Belgium. Check Google for local initiatives. I'm excited to see that the number of Belgian participants is at three now, at the start of the week it was only one.
I'm happy to see this happening, as this restores a bit of my faith in humanity. There may be hope for us yet :-)

Bring it, world!

What made me happy today? Feeling so ready to take on the world!
Let's be honest here for a second: nobody likes Monday. I mean, you just had two days off from work; you got to sleep in and stay up late. And if your weekend was anything like mine, it was an awesome one :-)
And then, at 5.30 in the morning the alarm goes off. It's pretty cold outside, with a chilly wind and snow. So I bundled up and walked to the station to get on the bus. Which, of course, was late (snow in Belgium). When I got to work and opened my emails, I found out that somewhere something went pretty wrong and I had to fix it. Which basically meant 4 - 5 hours of re-work. I could have gotten angry or sad about it; I could have complained or I could have let my head hang. Instead I decided to put on my big girl panties and boots :-) and I got a cup of coffee. After which I started working on the problem. And turns out it wasn't that much of a mess at all! Success!
That basically made me feel ready to take on the world. Well, at least ready to give Peter and Dilbert a swift kick in the behind. Which I totally did! Amazing for a Monday :-)

That knowing look

What made me happy today? Sharing that knowing look with a total stranger.
You know the one I mean. Not the one shared between friends, but the one shared between two total strangers.
Today is Saturday. Saturday for me usually has the same schedule. Get up at a reasonable hour, go to my Pilates class, have a sub for lunch and occasionaly do some shopping, then head on home to do other stuff. This Saturday was no different, but it was rather cold, so I decides to grab a latte at koffie Onan (I've mentioned them before: http://project365-oneyearofhappy.blogspot.be/2013/01/great-friends-and-great-coffee.html). Ok, it was only -1°C but the wind chill was terrible. With my coffee in my hands I was walking back home when it happened.
She and I crossed paths somewhere in the middle of the Diestsestraat. Both holding a take-away cup of coffee. Our eyes met, there's a little moment of recognition (noot because you know each other, but because you're doing the same thing), and we shared that knowing look and a tentative little smile. You know, the look that goes: yeah, it's cold, but the coffee is nice and warm for my hands and all the rest, so enjoy.
It happens on other occasions as well. I wear black clothes all the time. In the winter a lot of people do, but when you meet someone in the summer dressed in all black you may share that knowing look. Kind of like there's this bond between you, even though you don't know each other. Like sharing something, or knowing you're not the only one :-)
That makes me happy, because it makes me feel a bit as if I'm not the only one doing this. If that makes sense...

Also, koffie Onan's latte of the week is caramel. Really tasty! If you have the chance, go get one, it's worth it :-)

Great friends and great coffee

What made me happy today? Having great coffee with two great friends.
These days we always seem to be so busy. So it can be hard to maintain friendships, especially when balancing a career, classes, hobbies, family and friends. But on occasion you'll get those unexpected 'want to go out for coffee?' messages. Always nice :-)
That's precisely what happened to me yesterday. I was on Facebook, wishing two friends of mine a happy New Year and so we decided to meet up for coffee today.
Now I'm not really a coffee drinker, but I do like the occasional latte or other not-really-coffee-containing drink. Luckily, I live in Leuven. Which means that I am fortunate enough to have a great coffee and tea specialty bar in town. www.koffieonan.be (they're on Facebook too: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Koffie-Onan/97433414453) If you're ever in Leuven, please take some time to visit the store and have a drink there. It's really worth it. Kind people, great service and awesome coffee and tea. Want an example of how great they are? Well, a few weeks ago I wanted a coffee from their place. As it was really busy, I decided to have it 'to go'. So I counted out my money before ordering, just to speed things up. I get my coffee, pay for it and started walking out of the store. But just as I wanted to exit the shop, the owner came running up to me, telling me that I forgot my change. Apparently 'to go' is cheaper. I don't know a lot of shops where the owner runs after you because you forgot your change.
So I got to spend two hours sipping lattes, catching up with my friends. We talked about lots of stuff and generally just had a great time. Sometimes, that's all a girl needs :-)
And now if you'll please excuse me, I have to go bounce around my living room. Too much coffee...
